Real Triathlon Coaching (And Book Announcement)

I am a time-investment manager first, a triathlon coach second. My goal is to make you as fast as you can be, both physically and mentally, without compromising your life as you know it. Why? Because true success in the endurance sports realm comes from years of consistent training. The best way to ensure that isn’t to fill you up with Fish Oil or some other magical supplement. The absolute best way is to make training fun and effective, to make it complement the life (and lifestyle) you live on a daily basis. To make it part of what you do, who you are.

I was reminded by just how few folks get this when I ready another great technical post [http://alancouzens.blogspot.com/2009/07/science-of-steady.html] from a coach “in the trenches.” It’s well written and researched, but I it think really misses the point of what coaches are hired to do. We can get all geeked out about the data, but when I read scientific confirmation that 60 minutes of Threshold work has the same impact on your muscles that 90 minutes of steady training does, I think of only one thing:

WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU TRAIN THAT EXTRA 30 MINUTES IF YOU DON’T HAVE TO?

Thirty minutes a day might not seem like much on the surface, but that’s 3.5 hours a week. Or 14 hours a month. Or 168 hours a year. That’s a FREE WEEK of time. Where else in our 21st century lives can you find a week of time. What could you do with a week if someone just handed you a hall pass and said go?

More importantly, what do you say to the person (your coach) who has the knowledge and ability to give you that week…but doesn’t?

++++++++++++++++

It’s finally time to tell you about my next book. The working title is “Train to Live, Live to Train: The Insider’s Guide to Building the Ultimate Fitness Lifestyle” (pre-order here).  I have been working on this book for the better part of a year, and with the exception of case studies and pending contributions from some experts, it’s almost ready to go.

After years of coaching hundreds of age-group athletes to Ironman triathlon and marathon finishes, I have learned that truly successful endurance athletes do more than just eat, sleep, and train — they live an endurance lifestyle. In other words, fitness isn’t just about the workouts you do or the equipment you use, it’s how you recover. How you sleep. How your family supports you. How well your training fits with your life, job, and social world. Who your friends are. This list goes on.

The Book will cover the new fundamentals of endurance training, as learned from my coaching experiences over at Endurance Nation. I also discuss work/home life, injury management, nutrition, strength training, benchmarking, professional support, racing and more.

Wherever possible, I provide real world examples and tips to help you re-create the same powerful effects in your own life.

You can pre-order the eBook for $20 below, I will deliver it to you when it’s 100% complete (note: final retail price will be $37).
