I hear you on the relaxation in the water. As a beginner, you are doing the right thing! With swimming it's _all_ about the technique. Besides, on race day, you can only swim as fast as you can sustain without getting tired...technique will keep you in that "happy place" when everyone else is pounding on you!

Good luck!

Closing my eyes while I swim. Every swim begins with drills, I don't start my sets until I recapture that "aha" moment, the moment when I get my hip drive coordinated with my arm drive and I feel myself sliding through the water smoothly. I find it's easier for me to "feel" this with my eyes closed, rather than to watch my arms as they enter the water. During my sets if I lose the smoothness, I immediately revert back to slower stroking and more gliding until I get the feeling back. Yes, this does mean that I don't always get my WO done exactly as specified in my training plan, but I'm still a beginner, so I'm working on fitness. Eventually I think that if I force myself to practice the technique correctly, more and more of it will become automatic and I'll be able to self correct more quickly.
