There is no substitute for time in the saddle and small improvements learned in the process each year accumulate to a signficant advantage. Look at Riis and CSC - there is no single breakthrough that makes them the best pro cycling team, it's just a relentless pursuit of incremental improvements, efficiencies, and the psychological boost from knowing you are doing all the "little" right stuff based on experience.
