Racing Is Like A Holiday

You know what you want. You’ve been good, done your training. You’ve sent holiday cards and bought decorations. You delicately wrap well-thought presents for others. And now it’s your turn.

You spend all week walking by the pile of presents, wondering which is yours. And then finally the day is here. It starts wicked early since you can’t sleep. You gather with others and, in a single motion, begin the unwrapping process at 7am.

This entire process of unwrapping takes several hours (the race) and along the way you can begin to gather clues about what your present will be. You shake it. You get a glimpse of a side of the box, maybe even a peek at a picture of what’s inside.

Your race day is no different. As the day unfolds you begin to sense what it is you’ll be gifted by the end of the day. And while there are decisions to be made on the day itself, in many ways what you get on race day is a function of what you have earned all year long.

You might not be happy with the token fruitcake from Susan…but did you go out of your way this year to earn anything different. You might not be happy woth the same reaults as in previous races, but did you do anything differently?

Even more important than ‘what you get’ is the spirit of the day. We don’t — or shouldn’t keep score of the gifts — the mere fact that we can give and share and do so with other loved ones is the point. Don’t let your final raceday ‘gift’ distract you from what’s important.

Remember that at the end of the day you ‘gift’ can still be exchanged. You can race again. There will be another event you can aim for. Just remember that if you want something newer/better/cooler/more different, well, you had better start thinking about how you are going to make that happen now instead of keeping fingers crossed on the day itsellf.

Just saying.
