This week has been a wild one, bouncing back from my half marathon (race report) and prepping for my upcoming work / training trip(s) through Minneapolis and Austin (more on those soon). Really looking forward to some plane & hotel time to get some quality work done…now I just have to remember to sleep!

With the recent release of Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers (2008), there was a great deal of interest on the part of coaches who latched on to his rule for how people become “great” at something: the 10,000 hour rule. The simple math makes this 20 hours a week for 10 years, and the premise is that lots of time is required before one can realize their potential.

The best training plans in the world aren’t worth crap…if you don’t actually follow them. 6-months, 12-months, 5 years…all of it can be crap if you let it. In fact, planning further ahead only serves to increase the likelihood of crap in your future.
