All -
I a solid day last week doing performance testing at a training weekend for two local tri teams: Team Envision and TriFury. I do this weekend every year and am honored to connect with such inspiring folks! This talk was my first real public presentation on the 10Hours concept, and it went pretty well. Here are the notes…
Rethinking the Triathlon Training Paradigm
Key Questions for Today’s Talk
1. Who wants to be the best triathlete they can be? What’s the best way to become that version of yourself?
2. What is our biggest roadblock to success? Answer = Time.
3. What can you do when you have a finite timeframe and specific goals? Answer = Almost anything.
Part One: Who wants to be the best triathlete they can be? What’s the best way to become that version of yourself?
- Our sport is one built on a personal journey.
- What journey’s are told / become popular?
- Redefine the Question: Not what is the best overall protocol, but what is the right protocol for ME.
Old Planning Paradigm vs New Planning Paradigm
• Plan a year vs Plan your next race
• Athlete vs Individual
• Old Technology vs New Technology
Part Two: What is our biggest roadblock to success? Answer = Time.
Time outside of training impacts our training time.
My job is one of personal organization, not just athletics!
What Saves Time?
• 80/20 Principle from the business world. In training, 20% of your training will generate 80% of the results. So focus on what’s IMPORTANT.
• Parkinson’s Law: Amount of work will expand in direct relation to the amount of time you have alloted for it’s completion.
Part Three: What can you do when you have a finite timeframe and specific goals? Answer = Almost anything.
- Appropriate application of resources (time, money, energy, etc.) to acheive desired outcomes.
- Coming to terms with the limitations is freeing. Really.
- Quality over Quantity doesn’t mean easy over hard. Usually the opposite.
Actual Steps:
• Be specific and focused: Know what you need to work on and find the shortest path from where you are now to that point.
• Be efficient: Be organized in all aspects of your life; exercise and otherwise. You are an organism, not a bunch of verticals slapped together.
• Be prepared: Spend 5 mins the night before getting stuff ready, spend weekend time preparing week worth of food.
