Pre-Run: Bundled Up!

Post-Run: Two Hugs and 25.3 miles!

Dear Reader -

As you know by now, I recently organized a short-term grassroots effort to raise money to help the people of Haiti. We have completed the project, with everyone running yesterday on 1/18/2010. We raised well over $20,000 — TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS — in just four days (details below)…quite a feat considering the terms of the challenge. Read on or watch my thank you video here.

Known as the Run For Haiti Project (http://runforhaiti.wordpress.com/), I challenged my personal network of athletes and friend to raise $2500 with the promise to run a mile for every $100 raised…all on Monday, January 18th, 2010. I personally ran 25.3 miles (here’s the route) on Sunday the 17th, and even included a pit stop outside the door of the Partners In Health offices in Boston (picture).

All money donated went directly through Firstgiving to Partners in Health. PIH has over two decades of experience working in Haiti; you can learn more about them on the web or read about the organization through the work of one of it’s leading physicians, Paul Farmer: Mountains Beyond Mountains.

In addition to the official RFH website, I created a Facebook Group to help people connect and spread the word. I will leave that group open so that people can continue to connect and find ways to help Haiti, but please know that the challenge has concluded (although money will continue to be donated should you “sponsor” a runner).

Run For Haiti Summary:
Days to Play: 4
Athlete Participants: 18 (view them all here)
Total Money Raised: $23,735.00

Despite the best efforts of these amazing folks (and their sponsors) there’s still a lot to be done. Fortunately the global response has been such that you almost can’t turn around without finding another way to help. From texting to sending supplies, the options are endless. If you are considering a donation, I encourage you to think of Partners in Health or a similar locally-based operation.

Do your part. Remember that every little bit helps and even sending an email can make a significant impact.

Thanks!

Patrick
