There’s a lot of readily available technical advice and information how to improve your endurance training. From using supplements to equipment selection, from training advice to going as far as to leaning your genetic blueprint to customize how you eat and what supplements to take…it’s all out there. But none of them work as effectively as being consistent: doing what you need to do day-in, day-out to manage your training, your nutrition, or whatever you focus may be. The trick is figuring out how you can be consistent.

They’ll discover someone else has already asked it, and that other triathletes and coaches have ranked the answers by helpfulness. They don’t have to sign in to see the answer, or even to ask a follow up question or leave an answer of their own. Drop. Dead. Simple.

Week 12 of the OutSeason has been less than kind to me. I was riding a bit of a high coming out of last week’s ITT result, and the real-world was there waiting in the shadows to kick me in the nuts. Nothing too bad, mind you, but the picture above tells the story: I simply did less work this week. Nuff said.

Swimming year-round for the age-group triathlete is really just busy work. Filing papers at the office. Making sure the pencils at your desk are extra-sharp; that the printer tray is 100% full of paper. Call it what you want, but see it for what it is: extra work that doesn’t necessarily make a difference.

With the recent release of Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers (2008), there was a great deal of interest on the part of coaches who latched on to his rule for how people become “great” at something: the 10,000 hour rule. The simple math makes this 20 hours a week for 10 years, and the premise is that lots of time is required before one can realize their potential.
